What is the source of elevation data, and what is the data accuracy? It seems to be off in some cases by 6 inches, which is fine for mountain hiking perhaps, but not for street flooding warning purposes.

The elevation data is for recreation activity purposes only. It should not be used for something like street flooding warning. No guarantee is made as to the accuracy of the elevation data and you should not use the data for any purpose that relies on the accuracy of the data.

We use various providers for the elevation data. The accuracy of the data may vary depending on the area/region being mapped. Depending on the region, the elevation data may have been generated from SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission) data.

The resolution of the elevation data locations will also affect the accuracy of the data. As an example, if you check the elevation of a point at the top edge of a cliff, you may receive the elevation data for the top of the cliff or the bottom of the cliff. Trails such as switchbacks going up the side of a mountain may have similar accuracy problems since the resolution of the elevation data points does not allow for elevations of every possible latitude/longitude position.

Elevation Graph is a very useful feature, and just knowing the accuracy in a polygon of county or whatever sourced the data would be helpful, because if the current water level is stated on some website, you might want to change your route. You already nailed the pedometer aspect on the site. Please consider expanding the usage to other scenarios, such as potentially being stranded and needing a way back.

But how often is the data updated, if ever?

We use third part providers for elevation data. Any updates to elevation data would be controlled by our service providers. It is likely that in most cases, the data is very infrequently updated.

In terms of mapping data, the Open Street map data is updated frequently. Changes to the Open Street map data can appear on Map Pedometer within days of the changes. Routing data is typically updated within a few weeks from when an Open Street map update has occurred.

You can use your mouse pointer to highlight individual points on the elevation graph. The popup box will show the distance and the elevation in feet or meters. While you move your mouse over the elevation graph, there is a black circle marker that will be displayed over the route. This shows you the location of the elevation point along your route.

Registered users can see the total upwards and downward elevation change totals on the My Routes page.
