Map Pedometer - How far did you go?

Hi board. I wear a weight watcher pedometer. I noticed it only ticks up when my right foot hits the ground in front of me.

I believe this is only counting half the steps I take.

Is this correct?

How is a step defined?

When I climb stairs I count each footfall as a step.
